Turnovers Doom Lakers in Game 4, LeBron James Admits

The Los Angeles Lakers failed to protect the basketball in Game 4 of their first-round playoff series, committing 23 turnovers in a 115-96 loss to the Houston Rockets on April 26, 2026, at Toyota Center in Houston.

Early miscues set the tone

Los Angeles turned the ball over eight times in the opening quarter yet trailed by only five. The deficit remained manageable at halftime, but another rash of mistakes after the break allowed Houston to seize control.

“We had a few turnovers, which was our kryptonite tonight,” LeBron James said postgame. “My turnovers are unacceptable, but we’ll do a better job Wednesday.”

James leads in both minutes and mistakes

James, who played 45 minutes two nights earlier while guiding the Lakers to a Game 3 victory, was charged with eight turnovers—more than any other player on the floor. He finished with a team-high in giveaways while the Rockets converted L.A.’s 23 overall miscues into 30 points.

“Defense wasn’t our problem tonight. It was the offense,” James added. “We turned the ball over 24 times for 30 points.” The Lakers also managed only five three-pointers in the defeat.

Rockets pull away in the third

Houston opened the second half on a 12-4 run to move ahead 68-51, then closed the third quarter with another surge that pushed the margin to 90-65 entering the final period.

Ejection sidelines Ayton

Center Deandre Ayton paced Los Angeles with 19 points but was ejected with 5:55 remaining in the third quarter after a Flagrant Foul 2 for striking Alperen Şengün in the face with an elbow and forearm. The call drew immediate protests from Ayton, head coach JJ Redick, Marcus Smart and James, who called the decision “ridiculous.”

The series resumes Wednesday, when the Lakers will try to cut down on turnovers and level the matchup.
