The New Orleans Pelicans have met with former NBA All-Star guard Rajon Rondo as part of their ongoing search for a full-time head coach, league sources told The Stein Line.
Rondo, 40, joined Doc Rivers’ staff in Milwaukee as a special assistant in 2024 after ending a 16-year playing career in 2022. His coaching aspirations date back to his Boston tenure, when then-coach Brad Stevens included him in staff meetings while Rondo recovered from a torn ACL.
According to the report, New Orleans has contacted several other candidates: Spurs assistant Sean Sweeney, Bucks associate head coach Darvin Ham and Nets assistant Steve Hetzel. Ham is also viewed as a possible option for Orlando if the Magic move on from Jamahl Mosley.
The Pelicans have additionally requested permission to interview Pistons assistant Jarrett Jack. Jack spent three of his 13 NBA seasons in New Orleans before transitioning into coaching following his 2021 retirement. He worked two years on the Suns’ bench prior to joining Detroit.
Interim coach James Borrego, who stepped in after Willie Green was dismissed in mid-November, remains firmly in contention for the permanent role. Borrego, hired as associate head coach in 2024, guided the Pelicans to a 24-46 record over the remainder of the season.
