Former Los Angeles Lakers guard Derek Fisher pushed back against accusations that LeBron James is “ring chasing” by signing with the Philadelphia 76ers, saying championships historically follow elite players rather than the other way around.
Speaking on 97.1 The Fan LA, the five-time NBA champion argued that James, 41, drives title contention wherever he plays. “You’re not ring chasing when you’re the guy that creates the rings,” Fisher said, referencing legends such as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. “It’s not like a ring is sitting in Philadelphia and he’s going to chase it. His addition increases the chances of them getting it.”
Star-Studded Roster in Philadelphia
James agreed to join a 76ers squad that already features three All-Stars—Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and recent trade acquisition Jaylen Brown. Before the signing, preseason projections listed the New York Knicks, San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder as leading title contenders; Philadelphia’s odds improved only after James committed.
James Sought Best Path to Another Title
The four-time MVP said the Sixers offered the best opportunity among the teams he considered. Fisher echoed that sentiment, noting the move does not guarantee a championship but strengthens Philadelphia’s chances.
No Immediate Plan for Bronny James to Join 76ers
James’s decision prompted speculation that his son, Bronny James, might seek a trade from the Lakers to play alongside his father. Team officials said no such discussions are underway.
The Sixers will open training camp in late September, when James is expected to speak publicly about his first season in Philadelphia.
