On July 18, 1996, the Los Angeles Lakers reshaped their future by securing free-agent center Shaquille O’Neal to a seven-year contract worth $120 million.
The agreement ended O’Neal’s four-season run with the Orlando Magic, where he had already established himself as one of the NBA’s dominant big men. Seeking a franchise cornerstone following several years of middling results, Lakers general manager Jerry West led the pursuit and ultimately persuaded the 24-year-old superstar to relocate to Los Angeles.
