LeBron James says the Los Angeles Lakers squad that captured the 2020 NBA championship ranks among the teams he has enjoyed playing for the most.
Speaking on 16 July 2026, the four-time champion was asked to identify his favorite team of all time. According to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, James cited four groups: the “Heatles” era Miami Heat, the 2016 Cleveland Cavaliers, the 2020 Lakers and the 2008 U.S. “Redeem Team.”
James’ praise for the 2019-20 Lakers comes after an eight-year run in Los Angeles that ended this offseason. The forward joined the franchise in 2018 and stayed through 2026, marking his longest uninterrupted tenure with any NBA club. During that stretch, the Lakers’ 2020 roster—featuring Anthony Davis as his primary co-star—posted one of the league’s best regular-season records, then dominated the playoffs inside the COVID-19 “bubble” at Walt Disney World. James earned Finals MVP honors for the performance.
When the Lakers’ 2025-26 campaign concluded, James reiterated that raising the 2020 Larry O’Brien Trophy remains his top memory in purple and gold. “That was the reason why I came here,” he said at the time, noting the satisfaction of restoring the franchise’s championship tradition.
James has not yet announced which team he will join next season.
