Former Los Angeles Lakers center and Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer Pau Gasol watched from the stands on July 19 as Spain defeated Lionel Messi’s Argentina to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The match, staged on the East Coast of the United States, delivered Spain’s second world championship and its first since 2010.
The Barcelona native posted a celebratory message on social media shortly after the final whistle. “It’s no coincidence. It’s the result of years of work, of growing together, of building a team that never stops believing,” Gasol wrote in Spanish, later translated into English. “From the tenacity, courage, and unity of a squad that trusts until the very last minute that, even if the ball isn’t going in, it will end up going in. And it did.”

Gasol’s long record of international success
Gasol, who first rose to prominence at 18 with FC Barcelona, owns an extensive résumé of his own on the global stage. He earned 2006 FIBA World Cup MVP honors, captured two FIBA EuroBasket MVP awards, and helped Spain secure three EuroBasket titles in 2009, 2011, and 2015. His trophy case also includes three Liga ACB championships (1998–2001) and Olympic medals—silver in 2008 and 2012 and bronze in 2016.
Lakers still searching for second assistant general manager
While Gasol celebrated abroad, his former NBA team faced front-office uncertainty. General manager Rob Pelinka announced early in the offseason that the Lakers would add two assistant general managers. The franchise filled the first position by hiring Rohan Ramadas as assistant GM of strategy and data systems to oversee analytics. A second role, responsible for scouting and player development, remains open, and multiple candidates have reportedly expressed confusion about the interview process.
