Wizards’ top draft choice remains unsettled, insiders say

The Washington Wizards possess the No. 1 selection in next month’s NBA Draft, yet league personnel insist the decision is not finalized, according to conversations at the draft combine in Chicago.

While most public mock drafts project Washington to take BYU swingman AJ Dybantsa, a high-ranking scout told CBS Sports the outcome is “absolutely not” a foregone conclusion. Several executives, agents and players attending the combine echoed that view, describing the situation at the top of the board as fluid.

Workouts and possible trade chatter

Dybantsa said on lottery night that he intends to work out for multiple teams. People familiar with his thinking note he would be comfortable in Utah, where he has lived and played the past two years. Earlier speculation about a possible pick swap between Washington and the Utah Jazz, who hold the No. 2 selection, has cooled, and sources say Dybantsa’s representatives are not pushing for a move.

Favorites remain, but certainty does not

Despite the uncertainty, many league observers still believe Dybantsa is the frontrunner for the Wizards. Should Washington go in a different direction, multiple scouts expect Utah to draft Kansas guard Darryn Peterson at No. 2, viewing him as a top-tier prospect in his own right.

With less than six weeks until draft night, executives caution that the order at the top remains subject to late workouts, medical reviews and potential trade offers.
