Free-agent forward Dean Wade is joining the Philadelphia 76ers on a four-year, $39 million agreement, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

The 29-year-old leaves Cleveland after seven seasons. League sources said several playoff contenders pursued Wade, with the Detroit Pistons emerging as Philadelphia’s main rival before the Sixers closed the deal.

Jake Fischer of The Stein Line reports that the final season of the contract carries a partial guarantee. Philadelphia is expected to utilize the non-taxpayer mid-level exception; a flat contract structure would leave a little more than $5 million of that exception unused. By using more than the taxpayer portion, the club becomes hard-capped at the first tax apron for the 2026-27 season.

Defensive Specialist

Wade averaged 5.8 points, 4.2 rebounds and hit 36.2 percent from three in 22.3 minutes over 59 games last season. Despite modest box-score numbers, the 6-foot-9 forward was frequently assigned to opponents’ top perimeter scorers and posted a team-best +5.0 net rating during the Cavaliers’ run to the Eastern Conference Finals.

Connections and Competition

New Sixers president of basketball operations Mike Gansey, who originally signed Wade to a two-way contract with Cleveland in 2019, was viewed as a key factor in bringing the undrafted Kansas State product to Philadelphia.

The Lakers and Clippers also showed interest, per Michael Scotto of HoopsHype. Re-signing Wade had been a priority for the Cavaliers, but they will now lose him as well as guard Keon Ellis, who accepted a two-year, $18 million offer from Brooklyn.

Roster Implications

Wade’s arrival could affect negotiations with free-agent swingman Kelly Oubre Jr., though Philadelphia retains full Bird rights on Oubre and can still bring him back.

Injuries have limited Wade to an average of 55 games over the past six seasons, surpassing 60 appearances only once.
