The Minnesota Timberwolves plan to retain Chris Finch as head coach for the 2026-27 season, according to a report by Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic.

Finch, 56, has led the club since February 2021 and owns a 258-193 record, good for a .572 winning percentage. Minnesota has finished above .500 and reached the playoffs in each of his five full campaigns, advancing to the Western Conference finals in both 2024 and 2025.

The 2025-26 regular season produced another 49-win effort and a No. 6 seed. The Timberwolves upset the third-seeded Denver Nuggets in the first round before being eliminated by the second-seeded San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference semifinals, capped by a lopsided Game 6 loss on Friday.

Finch, who has two years remaining on his contract, indicated after the defeat that roster adjustments could be necessary to contend with the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder and the surging Spurs. “You either gotta be a problem or have a solution,” he said. “You have to be built in a way that troubles your opponent with something they don’t have or have something to counter what they do have.”

Ownership partners Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez are reportedly interested in extending president of basketball operations Tim Connelly. Team personnel on both the basketball and business sides were also pleased that general manager Matt Lloyd remained in his post after being a finalist for the Chicago Bulls’ top front-office job, which ultimately went to Bryson Graham.
