Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick finished seventh in the 2025-26 NBA Coach of the Year voting announced on May 26. The award went to Boston Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla, as determined by a global panel of 100 media members.
Redick’s second season on the Lakers bench produced 53 victories, following a 50-win campaign the year before. It marked the franchise’s first set of consecutive 50-win seasons since 2011.
The 41-year-old coach navigated extensive injuries to key players throughout the season. LeBron James missed the first 14 games and appeared in 60 overall, Austin Reaves played 51, and Luka Doncic logged 64. Marcus Smart, Deandre Ayton, Rui Hachimura and Jaxson Hayes also missed stretches.
Despite the absences, Los Angeles secured the No. 4 seed in the Western Conference, defeated the Houston Rockets in six games in the first round and bowed out to the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder in the conference semifinals.
Speaking at season’s end, Redick acknowledged the roster needs improvement to contend for a championship. “I believe in continuity,” he said, “but we’re not good enough right now. That’s what the next two months are for.”
