Sandro Mamukelashvili Embraces Lakers’ Spotlight After Off-Season Overhaul

The Los Angeles Lakers have rebuilt their roster only three months after reaching the Western Conference semifinals, replacing every starter from their first-round victory over the Houston Rockets. New arrivals Walker Kessler, Quentin Grimes, Collin Sexton and Sandro Mamukelashvili will line up alongside holdovers Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves when training camp opens.
Mamukelashvili, 27, signed a four-year deal following a career-best season with the Toronto Raptors. Speaking at his first Lakers media session, the Georgian forward called the franchise “very high-level” and said the chance to wear purple and gold was decisive.
“It’s the biggest stage, the best organization,” he said. “You can’t run away from the spotlight. Playing with superstars like Austin and Luka Doncic is only going to make me better.”
Mamukelashvili is expected to fill the role previously held by Rui Hachimura, providing a complementary front-court option next to Doncic and Reaves. The guaranteed length of his contract and the allure of Los Angeles were key factors in his decision.
Grimes Prepares for Larger Workload
Guard Quentin Grimes, who signed for four years and $60 million, told ESPN LA’s “Mason & Ireland” that he is tailoring his offseason training to an expanded role. “I knew I was going to have a bigger offensive role,” Grimes said. “With Luka, he sets you up anywhere on the court, so I’m getting those corner threes up and working on pick-and-roll reads.”
The former Dallas and Philadelphia guard added that sessions with Lakers player-development coaches have “been phenomenal” as he prepares to start alongside Reaves.
Los Angeles opens the preseason next month with a revamped roster designed to maximize Doncic’s playmaking and return the franchise to championship contention.
