The Philadelphia 76ers secured LeBron James on a two-year, $8 million contract with a player option after a late push that began when the club acquired Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics earlier this month, according to The Athletic.
Team and league sources told the outlet that Philadelphia initially viewed itself as an unlikely destination for the 41-year-old forward. That outlook changed once first-year president of basketball operations Mike Gansey completed the Brown blockbuster, convincing the organization it could assemble a championship-caliber starting unit.
Decision Focused on Winning
A source close to James said the veteran prioritized adding another title over every other consideration. “There was no plan. There is no press conference planned in Philadelphia,” the source said, emphasizing that money played no role in the choice.
Recruitment Efforts
Guard Tyrese Maxey and center Joel Embiid contacted James multiple times during the process. Maxey shares agent Rich Paul with James, and the pair have trained together in past off-seasons. James and Embiid also played alongside each other on Team USA in the Paris Olympics.
How the Sixers Learned
Philadelphia did not receive confirmation until Friday morning. James informed his inner circle that once he reached a decision, he would call Paul, who would then notify the chosen team. Paul delivered the news to the Sixers late that morning. Because James was expected to sign for the veteran minimum wherever he landed, formal negotiations were unnecessary.
Other Suitors
• Golden State initially felt optimistic but ultimately concluded it could not present a realistic title path. Forward Draymond Green had opted out to create cap flexibility and explore a potential trade package involving Jimmy Butler for Anthony Davis. The Warriors now plan to bring back Green at roughly the $28 million salary he declined.
• Cleveland paused season-ticket sales in anticipation of a possible homecoming. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reported that three issues blocked a reunion: family considerations no longer being central, the Cavaliers’ inability to land Brown, and the absence of Darius Garland—another Paul client—who was traded last season for James Harden.
• Washington and Dallas showed no interest in dealing former James teammates Davis or Kyrie Irving, respectively, despite James and Paul seeking information about potential moves.
• Miami, which sent four young players to acquire Giannis Antetokounmpo, was viewed by James as lacking sufficient depth, Windhorst said. A brief, mistaken “LeBron James Introductory Press Conference” teaser posted by the Heat’s social-media staff did not factor into his choice.
