LeBron James explored multiple landing spots before committing to the Philadelphia 76ers, yet the New York Knicks chose not to pursue the four-time MVP when his representatives checked on their interest, according to league sources.
Sources told Hoops Wire that James’s camp reached out to the Knicks during the recent free-agency period. New York, fresh off its first NBA title since 1973, reportedly decided its current roster was strong enough without the 39-year-old forward.
The Knicks’ championship core remains anchored by Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges and Josh Hart. Team officials believed adding James would mean a significant roster shake-up they deemed unnecessary after a successful playoff run, the sources said.
New York also maintains it is still better positioned than Philadelphia, despite the 76ers’ high-profile offseason. James ultimately signed with the Sixers, joining Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, All-Rookie guard VJ Edgecombe and newly acquired All-NBA forward Jaylen Brown.
James, who will turn 42 in December, had been linked most prominently to Cleveland, Miami, Golden State and Philadelphia. The Knicks could have entered the mix, but opted to keep their roster intact and will now face James as a division rival.
