Los Angeles Lakers guard Austin Reaves is expected to become one of the most in-demand players when NBA free agency opens this summer, with league executives projecting offers that could reach $40 million per season, according to a report by The Athletic.
Reaves, 28, earned just under $14 million in 2025-26 and is coming off a career year with Los Angeles. While the Lakers have repeatedly said they intend to re-sign him, several franchises are positioning themselves to make competitive bids.
Cap-space leaders: Bulls and Nets
The Chicago Bulls and Brooklyn Nets are currently the only clubs holding enough salary-cap room to meet the projected $40 million annual figure without additional roster moves. Both organizations are searching for backcourt help and view Reaves as an immediate solution, the report said.
Potential movers: Hawks and Jazz
The Atlanta Hawks and Utah Jazz have also expressed interest but would need to shed salary to create the necessary space. Atlanta, coming off a 46-win season, is regarded by rival executives as the most serious threat to Los Angeles because of its established core led by All-Star forward Jalen Johnson and its need for a primary playmaker. Utah could also pursue Reaves to pair him with Lauri Markkanen and Jaren Jackson Jr. as the team aims to accelerate its climb in the Western Conference.
Winning remains a priority
League sources told The Athletic that Reaves places significant importance on joining — or staying with — a contender. That factor could weigh heavily in his decision if the financial terms are similar across multiple offers.
Lakers motivated by Doncic’s support
The Lakers have an additional incentive to keep Reaves: superstar guard Luka Doncic has reportedly informed team officials that he wants Reaves on the roster and does not want him included in any potential trade proposals, including hypothetical packages for Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Free agency is scheduled to begin shortly after the NBA Finals conclude, enabling Reaves and interested teams to negotiate formal offers. Until then, Los Angeles must prepare to match — or exceed — the market to retain one of this summer’s premier free agents.
