Portland Trail Blazers center Robert Williams III has agreed to a three-year, $44 million contract extension that will keep him in Portland through the 2028-29 season, agent Kevin Bradbury of LIFT Sports Management told ESPN on Tuesday morning. The agreement was first reported by Shams Charania.
The deal removes one of the most sought-after big men from this summer’s unrestricted free-agent market just hours before teams can officially begin negotiating at 3 p.m. PT. The Los Angeles Lakers had been linked to Williams as they prepare to enter free agency with projected cap space.
Despite playing only 85 games over the past three seasons and appearing in 44.8% of possible contests during his eight-year career, the 28-year-old remained a top target because of his rim protection and lob-finishing ability. His new contract averages roughly $14.7 million annually—an amount the Lakers could have absorbed but now will not have the opportunity to offer.
With Williams off the board, the center market thins considerably. New York Knicks reserve Mitchell Robinson is among the few remaining high-profile options. Los Angeles may also explore alternative avenues to add size.
The Lakers have shown interest in Toronto Raptors center Sandro Mamukelashvili, according to league sources. The 27-year-old stretch big shot 52.3% from the field and 38.9% from three-point range while averaging 21.9 minutes across 80 games last season.
Los Angeles opens its formal free-agency window later Tuesday, aiming to upgrade the roster around star guard Luka Dončić.
