Centers Walker Kessler and Jalen Duren headline the restricted market at positions the Lakers hope to fortify. However, sources cited by Woike anticipate the Utah Jazz will match any offer sheet Kessler signs, while the Detroit Pistons are projected to do the same with Duren.
Phoenix Suns center Mark Williams—acquired in a prior trade the Lakers later rescinded—could technically be available, but league observers question why Phoenix would part with assets to obtain Williams only to let him walk after one season.
Wing Options Also Complicated
On the perimeter, forwards Peyton Watson of the Denver Nuggets and Tari Eason of the Houston Rockets are viewed as intriguing two-way prospects. Both players, though, carry shooting and injury concerns, and their current franchises reportedly value them highly, making successful offer sheets unlikely.
Why Restricted Free Agency Is a Gamble
Because incumbent teams can match outside offers, prying away restricted free agents often requires an above-market bid. Such bids tie up cap space for up to 48 hours while the original club decides whether to match, a delay that can hamper other offseason plans. Executives told The Athletic that relying on restricted free agency is rarely a sound primary strategy.
Lakers’ Internal Priorities
While external targets appear difficult to secure, the Lakers are widely expected to focus on retaining key unrestricted free agent Austin Reaves. LeBron James holds a player option and also ranks among the most notable potential free agents this summer.
The Lakers will still survey the market, but early signals suggest restricted free agency will not provide an easy path to roster upgrades.
