Maverick Carter Denies LeBron James Is Planning a ‘Last Dance’-Style Documentary

LeBron James’ longtime business partner Maverick Carter on Thursday dismissed reports that the four-time NBA champion is close to sealing a deal with ESPN for a documentary modeled after “The Last Dance.”
“We are NOT doing anything like ‘The Last Dance.’ LeBron doesn’t even know when his last season is,” Carter wrote on X, directly pushing back on earlier claims.
The denial followed a story from The Athletic stating that ESPN and James were nearing an agreement on a behind-the-scenes series covering what many believe will be the closing years of the NBA’s all-time leading scorer.
NBA insider Marc Stein had also reported that veteran NBA Entertainment producer Andy Thompson—the principal videographer behind ESPN’s acclaimed Michael Jordan documentary—has spent several seasons filming James. That revelation fueled speculation that a similar project was in the works.
Carter’s statement addressed the comparison to “The Last Dance” but did not clarify whether the existing footage might eventually be used in another type of film or series. Neither James nor Carter indicated if or when a different documentary format could move forward.
For now, the prospect of a LeBron James project remains uncertain, and any potential retirement timeline for the 39-year-old Lakers star is still undetermined.
