The Washington Wizards have chosen not to pick up their $2,150,917 team option on forward Jamir Watkins, a move that will push the 2025 second-round selection into restricted free agency this summer.

According to Keith Smith of Spotrac, Washington plans to issue Watkins a qualifying offer worth approximately $2.39 million. By declining the option and extending the QO, the Wizards allow the 6-foot-6 wing to negotiate with other clubs while retaining the right to match any offer sheet.

Had the franchise exercised the option, Watkins would have remained under contract through next season and been eligible for restricted free agency in 2027. The decision suggests the Wizards may seek a longer-term agreement with the 24-year-old, who turns 25 next week.

Watkins signed a two-way deal in July 2025 and saw limited action early in the 2025-26 campaign. His role grew during the second half of the season, and Washington converted his contract to a standard NBA deal in late February. Over 50 games as a rookie, the former Florida State standout averaged 7.4 points, 3.9 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.1 steals in 20.6 minutes per contest.

Selected 43rd overall in the 2025 NBA Draft, the New Jersey native is regarded as a strong athlete and defensive presence on the wing.
