The Golden State Warriors mounted an aggressive push to land free-agent forward LeBron James this offseason but ultimately failed to sway the four-time MVP, ESPN reported.
League sources told ESPN’s Anthony Slater that Golden State asked James’s representatives if a specific roster move could persuade him to join the franchise. The response was negative, though insiders indicated that acquiring another marquee player—similar to Philadelphia’s deal for Jaylen Brown—might have strengthened the Warriors’ case. Team officials never found a viable path to such a blockbuster.
Internally, the Warriors even discussed a potential trade for Anthony Davis, but concluded a deal involving Washington would be prohibitively expensive, according to the report.
Personal Outreach From Team Leaders
Golden State’s recruitment extended well beyond front-office talks. Star guard Stephen Curry personally contacted James to express interest in teaming up, forward Draymond Green spent time with him on vacation, and team governor Joe Lacob sent a voice message to agent Rich Paul outlining the organization’s pitch, sources said.
The Warriors had the salary-cap flexibility to offer more than the veteran minimum and were open to allowing James to split the season between the Bay Area and Los Angeles. Despite those concessions, optimism inside the organization waned as free agency neared its close.
One league source suggested James preferred the idea of pairing with Curry on a neutral team rather than joining the franchise that had blocked his path in multiple NBA Finals.
Looking Ahead
James ultimately signed with the Philadelphia 76ers, leaving Golden State poised to return much of last season’s roster. Team executives believe they still have the assets to pursue an impact player should one become available later in the year, ESPN noted.
