The Cleveland Cavaliers are still regarded as one of the leading candidates to acquire forward Jonathan Kuminga if the Atlanta Hawks opt for a sign-and-trade arrangement, according to league sources.
Cleveland has already met with representatives for the 21-year-old, and league executives believe the Cavaliers and the Los Angeles Lakers are the two franchises most deeply involved in discussions.
The primary obstacle is financial. Kuminga is reportedly seeking a contract worth more than $20 million per season, complicating efforts to reach an agreement that satisfies the player, the Hawks and any potential trade partner.
Talks are not considered imminent, but they have not broken down either. Negotiations could continue well into August, a common timeline for complex free-agency matters.
From the Cavaliers’ standpoint, Kuminga fits the front office’s offseason goal of adding an athletic wing capable of guarding multiple positions, pushing the pace in transition and growing alongside the team’s established core.
For now, Cleveland remains firmly in the chase as all sides work to find financial common ground.
