Josh Richardson Announces End of 10-Year NBA Career

Veteran swingman Josh Richardson revealed on Instagram that he is stepping away from professional basketball, closing the book on a career that spanned from 2015 to 2025.
“I always gave my best, that’s why I can say this with no regret,” the 32-year-old wrote. “I am grateful to have been able to love this game and for it to love me back as much as it did.”
College Rise and Draft Night
Undervalued as a high-school prospect, Richardson blossomed at the University of Tennessee. He landed on the All-SEC First Team in 2015 and earned spots on the league’s All-Defensive squad in both 2014 and 2015. Miami selected the 6’5″ guard/forward with the 40th overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft.
Miami Breakthrough and Career Year
Richardson spent his first four seasons with the Heat, becoming a full-time starter in Years 3 and 4. His best statistical campaign came in 2018-19, when he averaged 16.6 points, 4.1 assists and 3.6 rebounds over 73 games.
Journeyman Stretch
He was shipped to Philadelphia in the 2019 four-team deal that sent Jimmy Butler to Miami. Additional trades followed: Dallas in 2020, Boston in 2021, San Antonio in 2022 and New Orleans in 2023. Richardson returned to Miami as a free agent that summer, played a reserve role for a season-and-a-half, and then moved to Utah at the 2025 trade deadline. Waived by the Jazz, he later signed briefly with Basket Zaragoza in Spain in early 2026.
Career Totals
Across 10 NBA seasons, Richardson appeared in 554 regular-season games, posting averages of 11.5 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 28.5 minutes while shooting .428 from the field, .363 from three and .846 at the line. He logged 30 playoff games with the Heat, 76ers and Mavericks.
Messages from former teammates poured in on social media. “The coolest,” wrote Dwyane Wade. “I loved going into the trenches with you, young fella.” Bam Adebayo, Tobias Harris and Udonis Haslem were among others offering congratulations.
Richardson will turn 33 in September.
