Warriors Face Pivotal Off-Season: Curry Seeks Extension, Kerr Yet to Commit

The Golden State Warriors have shifted into offseason mode after Friday night’s elimination, and several key figures are already outlining what comes next.

Curry Calls for a Fresh Foundation

Speaking with reporters, Stephen Curry said the franchise must “build the foundation again,” emphasizing a need for a faster, younger and more athletic roster to meet today’s NBA demands. “Before you win the title, you’re building the foundation,” the two-time MVP noted. “Then you accomplish it, and everything else is based off that.”

Kerr’s Future Remains Unsettled

Head coach Steve Kerr, who has completed 12 seasons in charge, has not yet committed to returning. During the closing minutes of Friday’s defeat, Kerr pulled Curry and Draymond Green aside to thank them, a moment Curry described as “definitely weird.” Multiple league sources told The Athletic they still expect Kerr back next season, but the ultimate decision rests with him.

Curry Open to New Deal

Curry, 36, is entering the final year of his contract at $62.6 million. According to The Athletic’s Nick Friedell, he intends to play at least two more seasons and is open to negotiating an extension this summer. The veteran guard added that recent knee issues should not linger long term.

Green Holds a Player Option

Green, 34, owns a $27.7 million player option for 2024-25. He reiterated his preference to remain with the only NBA team he has ever represented but acknowledged that the final call is not entirely his. “I’m not retiring,” he stated when asked about his plans.

Cap Flexibility on the Horizon

Front-office decisions extend beyond the team’s core. ESPN’s Bobby Marks projects that Golden State could fall below the luxury-tax line for the first time in years, potentially creating added roster flexibility. A rookie-scale extension for guard Brandin Podziemski is among the matters awaiting resolution.

The Warriors now enter an offseason filled with uncertainty—one that will determine whether the next iteration of the team can resemble, or even surpass, the championship standards set since 2015.
