Timberwolves Acquire LaMelo Ball, Send Naz Reid and Picks to Hornets

The Minnesota Timberwolves have traded for All-Star guard LaMelo Ball, moving center Naz Reid, one future first-round pick, three pick swaps and three second-round selections to the Charlotte Hornets.

Why Minnesota Moved

After consecutive deep runs in the Western Conference playoffs and a second-round exit this season, president of basketball operations Tim Connelly chose to pursue a higher ceiling rather than maintain the current roster. The addition of Ball aims to address the club’s need for a primary playmaking guard as veteran Mike Conley’s production declines.

Ball’s Recent Production

Ball, 23, averaged 20.1 points and 7.1 assists across 72 games last season, his healthiest campaign in several years. Minnesota expects his vision and passing to relieve scoring pressure on Anthony Edwards and to diversify the offense.

Fit and Remaining Questions

Pairing Ball’s playmaking with Edwards’s scoring gives the Timberwolves a new-look backcourt. However, the team loses Reid’s frontline scoring and versatility, and Ball’s previous injury history remains a concern. Additional roster moves to bolster frontcourt depth are possible before opening night.

For now, Minnesota signals an aggressive push in a crowded Western Conference, betting that Ball’s arrival can elevate the franchise’s championship aspirations.
