Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said he would consider eliminating the NBA’s three-point line, arguing that the modern game has become overly predictable because of analytics-driven shot selection.
Kerr shared the idea during an in-depth interview with The New Yorker, published as part of a broader feature on his future with the Warriors. While dismissing recent talk of adding a four-point arc, the nine-time NBA champion (five as a player, four as a coach) suggested moving in the opposite direction.
“I would never do a four-point play. In fact, I would even consider getting rid of the three-point line,” Kerr told the magazine.
The 58-year-old coach said teams now focus almost exclusively on layups and corner threes, leaving mid-range attempts in “no man’s land.” A 22-foot jumper, he noted, is often labeled a poor decision under current efficiency models.
Kerr acknowledged he is unsure whether abolishing the arc would succeed but believes it could reintroduce “creativity and variety” to offenses. The stance is notable given that Kerr’s Warriors, led by sharpshooters Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, helped usher in today’s perimeter-heavy style.
