James Harden and the Cleveland Cavaliers have yet to put pen to paper on a new contract, but league insider Shams Charania told ESPN’s “NBA Today” on Monday that he anticipates an agreement “in the near future.”

Harden turned down a $42.3 million player option on June 29 with the understanding that both sides would negotiate a multiyear deal. According to sources, the extra time is allowing Cleveland to preserve roster flexibility while it explores trades and free-agent signings.

The Cavaliers are reportedly active on multiple fronts after LeBron James opted to join the Philadelphia 76ers, giving Cleveland a clearer picture of its competitive landscape. The front office has been connected to Golden State forward Jonathan Kuminga, Chicago swingman DeMar DeRozan and other higher-profile targets whose names have not surfaced publicly.

Any eventual Harden contract is expected to be structured over several seasons at a reduced annual salary, creating additional room below the NBA’s luxury-tax aprons. That space could prove useful as the team weighs further moves this summer.

Cleveland acquired Harden from the Los Angeles Clippers in February in exchange for guard Darius Garland and a second-round pick. The 10-time All-Star averaged 20.5 points, 7.7 assists and 4.8 rebounds across 26 games with the Cavaliers.

Team officials view the unresolved contract as a strategic delay rather than a setback, believing it may help facilitate other roster upgrades before Harden formally re-signs.
