The Detroit Pistons have reached a contract extension with head coach J.B. Bickerstaff, the team announced on Thursday.
Bickerstaff, 47, has overseen a dramatic turnaround since arriving in July 2024. Detroit rebounded from a league-worst 14-68 record in 2023/24 to finish 44-38 and reach the playoffs in his first season on the bench. The climb continued in 2025/26, when the club posted a 60-22 mark—the best record in the Eastern Conference—and advanced past Orlando in the opening round after trailing the series 3-1.
The length and financial terms of the new deal were not disclosed. Bickerstaff originally signed a five-year contract with four guaranteed seasons when he took the job.
The extension was announced the same day Orlando dismissed head coach Jamahl Mosley. During an appearance on Stephen A. Smith’s radio show, Bickerstaff defended his friend and said he disagreed with the Magic’s decision.
Bickerstaff currently serves as president of the National Basketball Coaches Association and is a finalist for this season’s Coach of the Year award alongside Boston’s Joe Mazzulla and San Antonio’s Mitch Johnson. Before joining Detroit, he held head coaching posts in Houston, Memphis, and Cleveland.
Detroit meets Cleveland—Bickerstaff’s former team—in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
