ESPN has outlined a hypothetical trade in which the Minnesota Timberwolves would acquire Memphis Grizzlies star guard Ja Morant, pairing him with rising All-Star Anthony Edwards to form one of the league’s most explosive backcourts.

According to the proposed framework, Minnesota would receive Morant, while Memphis would obtain forward Julius Randle, guard Terrence Shannon Jr. and rookie center Joan Beringer. No formal negotiations have been reported, and the Grizzlies have not indicated any intention to move Morant.

Why the deal was suggested

ESPN argued that the Timberwolves may have reached their offensive ceiling with the current roster. Morant’s speed, shot creation and playmaking could address Minnesota’s long-standing need at point guard, a hole that grew larger after Donte DiVincenzo suffered a torn Achilles tendon. Pairing Morant with Edwards would, on paper, give head coach Chris Finch a high-octane guard duo while allowing the club to retain its defensive core of Rudy Gobert, Naz Reid and Jaden McDaniels.

Memphis angle

For the Grizzlies, the proposal fits speculation that the franchise could reset around younger talent and future flexibility. Randle would supply proven scoring and veteran experience, while Shannon and Beringer would offer potential upside. Shannon impressed during stretches of the postseason, averaging 17.3 points over a three-game span while filling in for Minnesota’s injury-depleted backcourt.

Salary considerations

ESPN cap analyst Bobby Marks noted that Minnesota would absorb additional salary in the scenario, a move that could trigger hard-cap restrictions and complicate efforts to re-sign free-agent guard Ayo Dosunmu.

Although purely theoretical, the idea of linking Morant with Edwards has generated offseason buzz and underscored league-wide curiosity about possible roster shuffles during the summer.
