The Orlando Magic have parted ways with head coach Jamahl Mosley, ending his five-year tenure with the franchise, the team announced Monday.
ESPN’s Shams Charania first reported the decision, which president of basketball operations Jeff Weltman later confirmed in a statement describing the move as “difficult” but necessary to bring “a new voice and fresh perspective.”
Playoff frustrations fuel change
Mosley guided Orlando to a 45-37 record this season, securing the No. 8 seed in the Eastern Conference. The club was eliminated in the first round for the third consecutive year, falling to the Detroit Pistons after squandering a 3-1 series lead and losing Game 7.
Despite injuries over the past two campaigns and rising expectations following the offseason addition of Desmond Bane, the Magic’s postseason ceiling remained unchanged. Orlando battled through the play-in tournament before dropping the opening playoff round, a scenario that ultimately prompted the coaching change.
Next steps for Orlando
Weltman, who signed a contract extension during the season, will oversee the search for Mosley’s successor. Early speculative candidates include Billy Donovan, Darvin Ham, Tom Thibodeau, and Dusty May.
Mosley’s potential landing spots
According to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto, Mosley has already drawn interest from the New Orleans Pelicans, suggesting the 45-year-old coach may not remain on the market for long.
Mosley compiled a regular-season mark of 184-226 with Orlando, helping steer the team through a rebuild and back into the postseason, but falling short of advancing beyond the first round.
