NBA executives once again admit they have no clear read on where LeBron James will play next season, according to multiple league sources.
Speculation touches nearly every corner of the league. The Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors are believed to be holding up portions of their offseason plans while they await James’ decision. The Philadelphia 76ers have emerged in some conversations after reportedly acquiring Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics, while the Miami Heat, Minnesota Timberwolves and Denver Nuggets have also been mentioned.
Agent Rich Paul fueled the uncertainty during an appearance on the “Game Over” podcast, outlining potential advantages and drawbacks for the Cavaliers, 76ers, Timberwolves, Heat and Nuggets. He went on to reference additional possibilities that include the Warriors, Dallas Mavericks, New York Knicks, San Antonio Spurs and Celtics.
James, 41, has staged similar free-agency dramas in 2010, 2014 and 2018. Although still productive and occasionally dominant, league insiders note that he may no longer be able to single-handedly transform a franchise as he once did, even while remaining the sport’s most prominent celebrity and a major commercial draw.
Several front-office officials believe James has already chosen his destination, but no consensus exists on which team that might be. For now, rival clubs continue to monitor every hint while preparing contingency plans if the four-time MVP chooses to relocate once again.
