Lakers Send Deandre Ayton to Wizards for Jaden Hardy and Two Future Second-Round Picks

Los Angeles, CA — July 3, 2026: The Los Angeles Lakers have agreed to trade center Deandre Ayton to the Washington Wizards in exchange for guard Jaden Hardy and Washington’s second-round draft selections in 2031 and 2032, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Deal provides cap relief and draft assets

Ayton, 27, opted into his $8.1 million player option earlier this offseason. Moving that salary clears roughly $2 million off Los Angeles’ books, as Hardy is owed $6 million for 2026-27 with a team option for 2027-28. The Lakers, already hard-capped at the first apron, had limited avenues to add players and picks; the trade supplies two future second-rounders to a franchise that previously held few draft assets.

Lakers pivot to backup-center search

With Ayton departing, newly signed Walker Kessler becomes the lone true center on the roster. League sources say Los Angeles is evaluating veteran free-agent options, including Andre Drummond, Jonas Valančiūnas and Kevon Looney.

Hardy reunites with Dončić

Hardy, 6-3, played alongside Luka Dončić with the Dallas Mavericks before a mid-season move to Washington last year. The 24-year-old averaged 9.2 points on 39.7% three-point shooting overall and improved to 12.6 points while hitting 42% from deep after arriving in Washington. Though not known for his defense, his perimeter accuracy addresses a stated Lakers priority.

Wizards add size after quiet start

Washington had taken a measured approach to free agency before landing Ayton, who now joins a frontcourt that lost depth earlier in the summer. The deal gives the Wizards a former No. 1 overall pick without surrendering first-round capital.

Roster turnover continues in Los Angeles

Los Angeles has already witnessed several departures: Marcus Smart (Houston Rockets), Luke Kennard (Phoenix Suns) and Jaxson Hayes (Utah Jazz) have committed elsewhere. LeBron James has informed the team he will not return, and forward Rui Hachimura remains unsigned.

The Lakers earlier used most of their spending power to add Kessler, Quentin Grimes and Sandro Mamukelashvili, but further moves are expected as the front office looks for a backup center and additional wing depth.
