LeBron James has stayed silent on his 2026 free agency, but agent Rich Paul outlined why several teams remain in play during Wednesday’s episode of the “Game Over” podcast with Max Kellerman. Using a whiteboard, Paul listed potential destinations and weighed the advantages and drawbacks of each.
Cleveland Cavaliers Remain Prominent
Paul confirmed the Cavaliers are “very much in the mix,” even after guard Darius Garland left the roster. He called Garland a player James “loves,” yet highlighted positives such as fit alongside Donovan Mitchell, James Harden, Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen. Paul also cited assistant general manager Brandon Weems—a longtime friend of James—as a major plus.
Philadelphia 76ers Offer Familiar Faces
The 76ers “deserve to be part of the conversation,” Paul said, noting James’s relationship with new president of basketball operations Mike Gansey from their Ohio high-school days. James is also high on guard Tyrese Maxey. With Jaylen Brown joining Joel Embiid, Maxey and rookie VJ Edgecombe, Paul called Philadelphia’s core “intriguing.”
Golden State Warriors Not Off the Board
Although the Warriors were not prominently placed on the whiteboard, Paul dismissed speculation that they are a long shot. Teaming James with Stephen Curry and Draymond Green “would obviously appeal,” he said, urging fans not to overinterpret his board’s layout.
Denver Nuggets a “Real” Candidate
When Kellerman questioned the presence of the Nuggets, Paul replied, “If they weren’t real, they wouldn’t be up there.” He referenced James’s friendship with governor Josh Kroenke and the opportunity to play alongside Nikola Jokić.
Miami Heat Check the Familiarity Box
Paul spoke favorably about a potential reunion with the Heat, pointing to James’s comfort with head coach Erik Spoelstra and president Pat Riley. He suggested returning to Miami would require minimal adjustment.
New York Knicks Complicated by Recent Title
Paul offered a surprising comment on the Knicks: “If the Knicks wouldn’t have won, there’d be no board. He’d be going to the Knicks.” New York’s 2026 championship, however, makes the scenario “considerably more complicated,” and league insiders continue to downplay the possibility.
Future Still Open-Ended
Paul rejected the notion that 2026-27 will automatically be James’s final season, adding that the four-time MVP has his family’s full support to finish his career wherever he deems best.
While the appearance did not eliminate any suitors, it succeeded in keeping speculation alive as free agency approaches.
