Cavaliers Unwilling to Include Evan Mobley in Potential Trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo

The Cleveland Cavaliers have not entertained the idea of sending Evan Mobley to Milwaukee in exchange for Giannis Antetokounmpo, two league sources told The Athletic.
The report surfaces as Cleveland faces a 3–0 deficit in the Eastern Conference finals after Saturday’s Game 3 loss to New York. One more defeat would end the NBA’s most expensive 2025/26 campaign and push the front office into a pivotal offseason.
Front-office pressure mounting
The club must address Donovan Mitchell’s contract—he becomes extension-eligible this summer with one guaranteed season remaining—and James Harden’s future, as the guard holds a 2026/27 player option but is considered likely to seek a multiyear agreement.
In the frontcourt, Mobley and Jarrett Allen are set for significant raises. Allen’s three-year deal worth more than $90 million begins next season, placing their combined salaries at $78.1 million in 2026/27 and rising afterward.
Previous discussions with Milwaukee
League chatter earlier this month, reported by Jake Fischer, positioned Cleveland as a possible destination for Antetokounmpo if the postseason ended in disappointment. Sources said Milwaukee asked for Mobley and every draft asset the Cavaliers could offer when the sides spoke before February’s trade deadline. ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne noted the Bucks prioritized obtaining a young cornerstone such as Mobley over a package heavy on picks.
Despite those conversations, Cleveland has “shown no interest” in sacrificing the 22-year-old former Defensive Player of the Year, according to the latest update. Mobley is nearly seven years younger than the two-time MVP, carries a lower cap figure, and is signed through 2030. Antetokounmpo, by contrast, can reach free agency as soon as 2027.
Cap constraints limit offseason options
With luxury-tax and apron thresholds looming, significant upgrades appear possible only if the team moves one of its four highest-paid players—Mobley, Mitchell, Harden, or Allen. Cleveland already made a major move at the trade deadline, sending Darius Garland to Philadelphia for Harden.
Whether the impending elimination shifts management’s approach remains unclear, but for now the Cavaliers have drawn a firm line on keeping Mobley out of any Antetokounmpo talks.
