Cavaliers Seen as Long Shot in Any Giannis Antetokounmpo Trade Talks

The Cleveland Cavaliers are not expected to aggressively pursue Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo, according to a joint report by Jake Fischer and Marc Stein of The Stein Line.

League sources told the reporters that concerns over Antetokounmpo’s willingness to sign a long-term extension in Cleveland have cooled the franchise’s interest. Speculation had suggested the Cavaliers might be willing to part with 24-year-old forward Evan Mobley in a blockbuster deal to team Antetokounmpo with Donovan Mitchell and James Harden, but multiple insiders indicated that scenario remains unlikely.

General manager Koby Altman reinforced that stance during his end-of-season press conference on Friday, stating, “Mobley is part of our future.” Altman declined to discuss Antetokounmpo directly, adding, “We’re not going to speculate on any player outside these walls.”

The Stein Line report aligns with a recent Athletic story by Joe Vardon that said Cleveland has shown no interest in a Mobley-for-Antetokounmpo swap.

Antetokounmpo is set to earn $58.5 million next season and holds a $62.8 million player option for 2027-28. His ability to opt out and become an unrestricted free agent next summer gives him considerable leverage and makes potential trade partners hesitant to surrender premium assets without assurance he would re-sign.

Earlier this month, Fischer reported that Cleveland could emerge as a plausible destination if the team suffered another early playoff exit. The Cavaliers did reach the Eastern Conference Finals but were swept in four games by the New York Knicks.

Front-office officials are reportedly wary of moving Mobley, viewing him as a bridge to a competitive future once Mitchell’s tenure ends. The organization also remembers the difficult rebuilds that followed LeBron James’ departures in 2010 and 2018, further dampening enthusiasm for a high-risk deal.
