Hornets Face Pivotal Summer After Breakout Second Half

The Charlotte Hornets head into the 2026 offseason with momentum they have not felt in a decade, two first-round draft choices, and critical decisions on the horizon for both their roster and balance sheet.

Season in Review

Charlotte finished the 2024/25 campaign at 19-63, extending the NBA’s longest active playoff drought to nine years. A slide of one position in the 2025 draft lottery left the club with the fourth pick, but the choice of 20-year-old wing Kon Knueppel proved decisive. Knueppel averaged 18.5 points, 5.4 rebounds and 3.4 assists across 81 games, shot .475/.425/.863 and became the first rookie ever to lead the league in three-pointers made (273). Behind his production, the Hornets jumped from 19 to 44 wins.

The organization also added three more rookies last summer. Late first-rounder Liam McNeeley (No. 29, acquired in the Mark Williams trade with Phoenix) and second-round selections Sion James (No. 33) and Ryan Kalkbrenner (No. 34) all logged rotation minutes. A separate deal sent veteran center Jusuf Nurkić to Utah for Collin Sexton and a second-rounder; Sexton was moved to Chicago in February for guard Coby White, who is now an unrestricted free agent.

The 2025/26 season began 11-23, yet a January surge flipped the script. Following a one-point loss in Milwaukee on Jan. 2, the Hornets routed top-seeded Oklahoma City, strung together nine straight victories, and closed the year 33-15. Their 44-38 record secured the East’s No. 9 seed. Charlotte survived an overtime play-in against Miami but fell by 31 in Orlando, stretching the playoff drought to 10 years.

Keys Behind the Turnaround

LaMelo Ball appeared in 72 regular-season games after averaging only 35 over the previous three years, stabilizing the offense. Former No. 2 pick Brandon Miller played 65 contests despite a partially dislocated shoulder, delivering 20.2 points per night on improved efficiency (.435/.383/.892) and sturdier defense. French center Moussa Diabaté, 24, earned the league’s Hustle Award while anchoring units that ranked first offensively and fourth defensively when he was on the floor.

Draft Capital and Cap Space

Charlotte owns two first-round selections in the 2026 draft—No. 14 (the final lottery pick) and No. 18—making it one of six teams with multiple picks. White carries a $25 million cap hold, while Miller becomes eligible for an extension this summer. President of basketball operations Jeff Peterson also has three mid-sized expiring contracts and a stockpile of picks available should the club pursue trades.

Offseason Checklist

  • Decide whether to re-sign White or allocate cap room elsewhere.
  • Select two prospects at Nos. 14 and 18—or package the picks for immediate help.
  • Weigh a long-term extension for Miller after his healthy, productive season.
  • Explore the trade market using expiring salaries and draft assets to upgrade the roster.

After assembling a core that posted the NBA’s eighth-best net rating over the final three months, the Hornets must determine whether internal growth is enough to end their 10-year postseason absence or whether a bolder approach is required.
