The Portland Trail Blazers are prepared to pursue a deal for Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo even if the forward declines to provide assurances that he will sign a long-term extension, according to a report published Sunday, June 7, 2026.
The New York Post story states that Portland’s front office is willing to absorb the risk of Antetokounmpo’s contract uncertainty in order to land the two-time NBA Most Valuable Player. Antetokounmpo’s current deal includes a player option that could allow him to enter free agency before the 2026-27 season, leaving any acquiring team without a guarantee beyond his existing agreement.
The report did not specify the assets the Trail Blazers might offer Milwaukee, nor did it indicate whether any formal talks have begun. It emphasized, however, that Portland’s interest remains strong “no matter the risk” associated with the 31-year-old’s future status.
Antetokounmpo, a seven-time All-Star who led the Bucks to the 2021 NBA championship, averaged 29.7 points, 11.2 rebounds and 6.4 assists last season. Portland, which missed the playoffs for a fourth consecutive year, has been searching for a transformational talent to pair with its young core.
The Bucks have not commented publicly on the report. Antetokounmpo has previously said his priority is competing for championships, but he has not addressed any willingness to consider an extension with a new team.
