Stacey King, a member of the Chicago Bulls’ first three NBA championship teams and the franchise’s television analyst for decades, died at age 59, the Bulls announced Sunday.
“Stacey loved being a Bull,” team president and CEO Michael Reinsdorf said in a statement. “You could feel it in everything he did — the way he played, the way he called games and the way he connected with our fans.”
Selected sixth overall in the 1989 NBA Draft after an All-America career at Oklahoma, King spent parts of five seasons in Chicago and contributed to the Bulls’ 1991, 1992 and 1993 titles alongside Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen. He later appeared with Minnesota, Miami, Boston and Dallas before concluding an eight-year NBA career in 1997.
King transitioned to broadcasting after retiring, becoming a familiar voice on Bulls telecasts and earning fan acclaim for his enthusiasm, humor and basketball insight. Reinsdorf noted that King “made people feel seen and valued,” whether on the air, in conversation or when posing for photos.
Before reaching the NBA, the 6-foot-11 center dominated at Oklahoma, where he was a consensus first-team All-American during the 1988-89 season.
No cause of death was released. King is survived by family and friends. Additional details were not immediately provided.
