Karl-Anthony Towns said he personally approached members of the New York Knicks coaching and training staff to ask for a change in his on-court role, a move he believes altered the team’s playoff trajectory.
In comments published Thursday, the All-Star center explained that the request preceded what he called a “playoff-altering” decision for New York. Towns did not detail the exact adjustments he sought but insisted the initiative came from him, not team management.
“I went to them and told them it was time to switch things up,” Towns said, adding that the staff agreed and implemented the changes shortly before the postseason.
Towns, who joined the Knicks after spending the first part of his career in Minnesota, suggested that the modification affected both his responsibilities and the team’s rotation. He contended the shift was pivotal as New York advanced through the Eastern Conference bracket.
The Knicks have not publicly responded to Towns’ remarks, and it remains unclear how the reported change was evaluated internally. No details were provided on whether other players were consulted before the adjustment was made.
