The Los Angeles Lakers plan to retain longtime executives Joey and Jesse Buss once the franchise’s majority stake is transferred to incoming controlling owner Mark Walter later this year, according to multiple reports.

Sources told ESPN that both brothers will continue in their current capacities after the Buss family completes the record-setting $10 billion sale. Joey Buss remains the club’s alternate governor and vice president of research and development, while Jesse Buss will stay on as assistant general manager.

The pending ownership change ends more than four decades of full Buss family control. Jeanie Buss, however, is expected to stay on as the team’s primary governor “for the foreseeable future,” the reports said.

Away from the Lakers, Joey and Jesse recently announced the launch of a global sports acquisition firm aimed at identifying potential investments and partnerships. The new venture will operate alongside their ongoing duties in Los Angeles.

The franchise is simultaneously preparing for its next on-court chapter. Luka Doncic, acquired ahead of the 2025-26 campaign, is projected to become the club’s marquee star after an offseason dedicated to conditioning and a strong showing at EuroBasket 2025.

The $10 billion agreement represents the highest sale price ever recorded for a professional sports team, and it arrives just five years after the Lakers captured their most recent NBA championship.
