The Washington Wizards announced Thursday that guard/forward Jamir Watkins had successful surgery to repair a torn ACL in his left knee.
The injury occurred during the Wizards’ Summer League opener against the Utah Jazz on July 9 in Las Vegas. Watkins, 25, logged two points and four rebounds in 20 minutes before exiting a game Washington went on to win by four.
Selected 43rd overall in the 2025 NBA Draft, the former Florida State standout signed a two-way contract last July. After limited minutes early in the 2025-26 campaign, he cracked the rotation late in the season for a rebuilding Wizards squad and was elevated to a standard two-year deal at the end of February.
Washington declined a $2.15 million team option on Watkins in late June but extended a $2.39 million qualifying offer to make him a restricted free agent. Instead of accepting that one-year offer, Watkins re-signed a few days later on another two-way contract valued at $679,000—half of the rookie minimum and non-guaranteed.
Known for his athleticism and defensive energy, Watkins averaged 7.4 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.1 steals on 44.6% shooting in 50 NBA games last season, while also appearing in nine contests for the G League’s Capital City Go-Go.
No formal recovery timetable was released, but ACL rehabilitation typically ranges from 10 to 12 months, putting Watkins’ availability for the 2026-27 season in doubt.
