Cavaliers weigh coaching stability, roster moves after Knicks sweep

The Cleveland Cavaliers exited the playoffs on Monday night after a four-game Eastern Conference finals loss to the New York Knicks, and head coach Kenny Atkinson quickly found himself under scrutiny. Before Game 4, Atkinson told reporters that analytics indicated Cleveland had “earned” two of the three expected wins in the series, a remark that drew criticism following the sweep.

Atkinson, hired two seasons ago, still has three years remaining on his contract. According to The Athletic, several postseason decisions—including rotation choices and a fourth-quarter collapse in Game 1—have raised questions about his future. Nevertheless, team owner Dan Gilbert, who reportedly hand-picked Atkinson for the job, has not wavered in his support. The coach also maintains strong relationships with stars Donovan Mitchell and James Harden, both of whom publicly defended him after the elimination game.

“I love Kenny. We love Kenny. I ride with Kenny,” Mitchell said. Harden added that Atkinson “did an unbelievable job” helping him adapt after his mid-season arrival and called the series outcome “an unfortunate situation.”

If the organization seeks accountability elsewhere, president of basketball operations Koby Altman could come under review, The Athletic noted. Early indications, however, suggest Altman is expected to stay in his role, per ClutchPoints.

Gilbert echoed Atkinson’s post-game assessment that Cleveland made progress this year but stressed the work ahead: “We took a step ahead this spring, but we are nowhere near where we need to be,” he wrote on social media, pledging an aggressive offseason.

ESPN’s Bobby Marks outlined key summer decisions, pointing to upcoming free agency for Harden and defensive forward Dean Wade, as well as the financial framework for a potential extension for Mitchell under the league’s latest salary-cap projections.

Separately, Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix argued that the Cavaliers should explore a reunion with LeBron James, contending that the four-time MVP could be the missing piece in a push toward the NBA Finals.
