Sports commentator Bill Simmons said the anesthesia haze from a recent colonoscopy left him baffled when he first heard rumors that the Boston Celtics might trade All-Star guard Jaylen Brown.

Speaking shortly after the July 2 procedure, the longtime Celtics fan quipped that he felt as though “I had a Paul George rammed up my ass,” a colorful way of describing how disoriented he was while trying to process the report.

Simmons did not elaborate on the specifics of any proposed deal but admitted the timing of the news—delivered while he was still coming out of sedation—made it especially hard to believe. “I thought I was still under,” he said.

The 54-year-old founder of The Ringer has built a reputation for impassioned takes on Boston sports. His latest remarks underline both his devotion to the Celtics and the shock many fans would feel at the prospect of losing Brown, a two-time All-Star and the team’s second-leading scorer last season.

As of Thursday, no trade involving Brown had been finalized, and the Celtics have not commented publicly on any ongoing talks.
