LeBron James is taking a measured approach to free agency after notifying the Los Angeles Lakers he will not return for the 2026-27 season, ESPN insider Shams Charania reported.
Charania said the four-time NBA champion has set no timetable for a decision and is evaluating “everything” before selecting his next team. According to the report, agent Rich Paul has fielded roughly a dozen proposals since the market opened.
Championship focus over contract size
The top priority, Charania noted, is joining a roster with a realistic path to another championship rather than simply signing the largest deal available.
League sources continue to identify the Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat as the primary contenders, with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Denver Nuggets and Philadelphia 76ers also monitoring the situation.
Warriors vs. Cavaliers viewed as 50/50
Nick Friedell of The Athletic told 95.7 The Game that the race currently feels “about 50/50” between Golden State and Cleveland. Friedell pointed to James’s relationships with Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and head coach Steve Kerr—strengthened during their gold-medal run at the Paris Olympics—as a significant draw for the Warriors.
A third stint with the Cavaliers, meanwhile, would allow the Akron native to close his career where it began in 2003 and where he delivered the franchise’s first championship in 2016.
James is expected to review offers over the coming days, with no firm deadline set for a decision.
