Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James outlined his approach to film study during the latest episode of the “Mind the Game” podcast with former NBA star Steve Nash.
James said his first focus when he sits down with game footage—or even glances at a courtside stat sheet—is his own turnover total. “The first thing I look at is my personal turnovers,” he explained, adding that he distinguishes between aggressive giveaways and what he calls “non-aggressive” or unforced mistakes.
After evaluating his turnovers, the four-time NBA champion shifts to two team metrics he views as effort indicators: the opponent’s offensive rebounds and fast-break points. “Are we boxing out, are we getting defensive rebounds, and are we getting back in transition?” he said. If those numbers are high, James believes the Lakers’ energy and focus need adjustment.
James emphasized that passive play often leads to avoidable errors. He accepts turnovers that come from attacking the rim or making ambitious passes, but he is critical of possessions where hesitation causes miscues. “It’s the ones where I’m not decisive that bother me,” he noted.
The 20-time All-Star also briefly addressed the recent retirement of longtime friend Chris Paul, calling the veteran guard “one of the best point guards to ever play the game.”
