Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James, 41, enters the summer relieved that, for the first time in several years, he is not beginning his break with a rehabilitation program.

“Just been chilling,” James said on the latest episode of his “Mind the Game” podcast. “I had a couple bumps and bruises to end the season, but an offseason without rehab is a success after a long season, so I’ll take it.”

Now finishing his 23rd NBA campaign, James missed the season opener for the first time in his career and sat out the first 14 games. After returning, he was absent only eight more contests and remained a central contributor as the Lakers advanced through the year.

The veteran accepted a third-option role early in the schedule but shifted back into primary playmaker duties when injuries sidelined Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. His efforts helped Los Angeles defeat the Houston Rockets in the opening round of the playoffs.

With more minutes logged than any player in league history, James has often spent previous offseasons focused on recovering from lingering ailments. Being able to rest instead of rehabilitate, he noted, is a significant change.

James holds a player option for the 2026-27 season and will become an unrestricted free agent this summer if he declines it. He told listeners he intends to evaluate his future in the coming weeks before announcing a decision.
