The Los Angeles Lakers are heading into the offseason with LeBron James once again eligible to test free agency, and team accountants may have the toughest task of all.

ESPN front-office analyst Bobby Marks, in newly released free-agent rankings, suggested the Lakers could offer James a one-year, $30 million contract featuring a full no-trade clause. While far below the maximum salary the 20-year veteran could command, the figure is presented as a compromise that would keep Los Angeles competitive while navigating the league’s restrictive salary tiers.

“Can the Lakers afford to bring back James on a $50 million salary and still be in a position to bolster their roster? That answer is a resounding no,” Marks wrote.

James, who turns 41 later this year, continued to perform at an elite level in 2023-24. He secured his 23rd consecutive All-Star selection and averaged at least 20 points, six rebounds and seven assists for the third straight season. The Lakers went 15-4 in games he played after March 1, with the forward remaining one of the league’s most effective transition scorers.

General manager Rob Pelinka applauded the superstar’s longevity, noting, “We probably haven’t seen a player that has honored the game to the extent that he’s honored the game.”

Marks argued that a reduced salary for James would give Los Angeles room to keep role players such as Luke Kennard and Rui Hachimura while still utilizing the full midlevel exception. Otherwise, the front office could face difficult choices, particularly with guard Austin Reaves also in line for a new deal.

Limited alternatives

Outside interest exists, but cap space is scarce. Marks listed the Cavaliers, Spurs, Nuggets and Warriors as potential destinations, though each would likely be limited to offering the veteran minimum.

James has indicated he is in no hurry to decide his future. “I’m still in the moment of just taking my time,” he said on a recent episode of his “Mind the Game” podcast. “I haven’t even really thought about it too much.”

Until the four-time MVP chooses his next step, the Lakers’ entire offseason remains on hold.
