Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul believes the Los Angeles Lakers should do everything possible to keep LeBron James in purple and gold after this season.
Speaking on the “Game Over” podcast alongside host Max Kellerman, Paul said the franchise ought to view the 41-year-old forward as an irreplaceable asset. “When you have a player like LeBron James, on and off the court, you keep that guy a part of your organization,” Paul stated. “You won’t find another.”
Contract Status in Question
Los Angeles declined to add a season to James’ deal last offseason, fueling speculation he might leave once his contract expires. James and Paul have repeatedly said the NBA’s all-time leading scorer intends to finish his career chasing championships and were unsure the Lakers could provide that opportunity.
Late-Season Turnaround
The mood shifted in March, when the Lakers went 15-2 to vault back into the Western Conference playoff picture. James has since guided the team into a first-round series with the Houston Rockets, highlighted by a 24 April Game 3 appearance at Toyota Center in Houston.
Expanded Role After Injuries
James missed the season’s opening weeks and later reduced his offensive workload to fit alongside Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. With both teammates now injured, the four-time MVP has reclaimed primary scoring duties, demonstrating he can still lead a contender.
Looking Toward Year 24
Paul indicated the forward can remain effective if the Lakers extend his tenure. James has adapted to playing next to Doncic and Reaves and could enter a 24th NBA season with less nightly responsibility when they return.
Managing Energy in the Playoffs
James recently discussed conserving fuel for closing minutes against Houston’s physical front line. Despite the grind, he has continued to log heavy minutes on both ends of the floor, underscoring Paul’s contention that the veteran retains plenty “left in the tank.”
