Rich Paul Describes LeBron James’ Decision to Leave the Lakers

Klutch Sports founder Rich Paul says LeBron James weighed both money and personal fit before choosing to end his eight-season run with the Los Angeles Lakers on the first day of 2026 free agency.

Speaking on the “Game Over” podcast with Max Kellerman, Paul recalled a conversation in which the 41-year-old forward concluded that returning to Los Angeles was not in his best interest, even though it likely offered the largest contract.

“Once he got to a place where he said, ‘Listen, I understand where things are … I’m 100 percent sure that’s not a place where I want to return,’” Paul recounted. “I double- and triple-checked.”

James, who helped the Lakers claim a 2020 championship and guided the club to an unexpected 2026 first-round playoff win despite early injuries to Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, will enter his 24th NBA season with another team yet to be announced.

Maintaining Communication With the Front Office

Paul said he informed general manager Rob Pelinka and head coach JJ Redick as soon as league rules allowed teams to speak with their own free agents. “We’ve had cordial conversations throughout,” he said. “Bron was like, ‘There really doesn’t need to be a meeting; this is where I’m at.’”

Rumors suggested Los Angeles never presented a formal offer, but Paul noted that a proposal was unnecessary once James made up his mind. “They wanted to bring him back, obviously,” he said. “I didn’t want to waste anyone’s time.”

Lakers Move Quickly After Departure

Following James’ decision, Pelinka reached agreements with Walker Kessler, Quentin Grimes, Sandro Mamukelashvili and Colin Sexton as the franchise reshapes its roster around Doncic, now the primary offensive option.

Hall of Famer Magic Johnson thanked both James and Paul on social media, recalling his role in recruiting the four-time MVP to Los Angeles in 2018.
