The Los Angeles Lakers believe newly signed forward-center Sandro Mamukelashvili can line up effectively next to recently acquired center Walker Kessler, according to a team source quoted by The Athletic.
The assessment comes after an offseason overhaul that placed Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves at the core of a revamped roster. Kessler’s arrival was considered a top priority by both the front office and Doncic, while Mamukelashvili was added to deepen the team’s supply of skilled big men.
Floor spacing cited as key factor
A Toronto Raptors official, speaking anonymously because Mamukelashvili’s deal has not been finalized, pointed to the 6-11 left-hander’s 38.9 percent three-point shooting last season and quick release as reasons he fits beside the rim-protecting Kessler. Lakers evaluators also value the Georgian’s ball-handling and decision-making, traits they believe can create “big-to-big” opportunities in half-court sets.
Mamukelashvili, 25, has spent five NBA seasons primarily in reserve roles but is expected to see time both as a solo big and in tandem with Kessler. With Doncic and Reaves drawing defensive attention on the perimeter, the Lakers view Mamukelashvili as a reliable outlet capable of either converting open looks or finding Kessler for high-percentage shots.
Defense and depth still on agenda
While Kessler’s shot-blocking is expected to cover some of Mamukelashvili’s defensive shortcomings, the club continues to search for a true wing stopper to complete its rotation. Los Angeles also needs a backup center after trading Deandre Ayton to the Washington Wizards; veterans Kevon Looney and Jonas Valanciunas are reportedly under consideration.
The Lakers begin training camp next month with several new pieces, but team officials believe the front-court pairing of Kessler and Mamukelashvili could anchor the group on both ends of the floor.
