Woodland Hills, Calif. — Newly acquired Los Angeles Rams defensive end Myles Garrett used his introductory press conference on June 2 to lobby longtime friend LeBron James to extend his stay with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Garrett, the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year, was dealt to the Rams from the Cleveland Browns earlier this offseason. Speaking at the Rams’ practice facility, he described the four-time NBA champion as a mentor and said he hopes their shared location will continue if James chooses to re-sign with the Lakers.

“He’s been a positive force in my life, always giving advice,” Garrett said. “If he wants to stay around for a couple more years, I know they’ll welcome him with open arms.”

James Still Weighing Future

James, 41, is an unrestricted free agent. While he has yet to announce whether he will keep playing — and, if so, where — his decision will determine whether the two Cleveland natives will again represent the same city.

Despite his allegiance to the Browns, James has frequently attended Rams games at SoFi Stadium. Garrett believes the NBA star’s presence would grow even stronger now that the All-Pro pass rusher is on the roster of a team widely viewed as a Super Bowl contender.

Consulting a Friend Before the Move

Garrett revealed he spoke with James before asking the Browns for a trade, seeking insight on what it was like for the basketball icon to leave Cleveland for Los Angeles in 2018.

“I wanted to understand his thought process,” Garrett explained. “It was about making a logical decision and easing the pressure of leaving a place that feels like home.”

Garrett said the two have not yet met in Los Angeles since the trade but expect to talk soon.
