Los Angeles Lakers guard Luke Kennard is open to remaining with the franchise beyond this season, according to a report from ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.
Kennard, 29, is finishing an $11 million expiring contract. After joining Los Angeles at last season’s trade deadline, the veteran emerged as more than a floor-spacer, handling additional playmaking duties in the 2026 postseason when Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves were sidelined by injuries.
The former first-round pick has suited up for five teams in nine NBA seasons but has never spent more than three years with one club. Having already called Los Angeles home during a previous 2½-year stint with the LA Clippers, Kennard is said to be comfortable in the city and has built strong relationships with his current teammates and first-year head coach JJ Redick.
Known as one of the league’s most accurate shooters, Kennard also flashed an ability to drive past aggressive closeouts, finish at the rim or find open teammates. While he is not regarded as a lockdown defender, coaches have praised his effort, timing and willingness to draw charges.
Key Offseason Decisions Ahead
The Lakers face several roster questions this summer. Veterans Marcus Smart, Rui Hachimura and Jaxson Hayes are all up for new deals, and the front office is expected to explore other avenues to keep the team in championship contention.
Smart, who earned $5.2 million last season, is likely to decline his player option and seek a raise while expressing a desire to stay in purple and gold.
How general manager Rob Pelinka prioritizes Kennard’s return alongside other roster moves will help shape an offseason the organization has labeled critical to its long-term plans.
